NAILED IT! Why your marketing content is "missing something"

Did you ever have a great vision of some marketing idea in your head, work for hours creating digital or print content, get to the end of the process, take a step back, and look at it thinking

"This is not what I pictured."

It's kind of like those "Nailed it!" photos you may have seen. A talented cake decorator posts a picture of a beautifully decorated cake on social media, and you think "I could do that!" You follow the professional's advice and recipe carefully, being sure not to cut any corners and even go out and buy all the same expensive, name brand ingredients. But in the end, the cake just doesn't look quite the same as the decorator's cake did in the picture.

Sadly, you have not "Nailed It"

It's not because you aren't good at baking, or because you tried to move quickly and carelessly. It's because the decorator has thousands of hours and years of experience decorating cakes (and probably professional cameras and lighting to make their photos pop). Simply using the exact same process and the exact same ingredients doesn't necessarily mean the results will be exactly the same.

Alternatively, let's say you knew the decorator personally, and they invited you to come to their kitchen for a month to help them decorate cakes. You start small, and gradually you are given more "high-profile" cakes as you gain experience and your design skills improve. At the end of your time with the decorator, you would be close to or even on the professional decorator's level because you had them to guide you and provide real-time feedback during your training.

Let's think about marketing in the same way. It's been said that it's hard to objectively measure what "good" and "bad" marketing is, but chances are you know it when you see it. Like cake decorating, using the same tools as professional designers to create marketing content doesn't guarantee that you'll produce the same high-quality finished product. Web platforms and online tools have made it easier than ever before for someone with the time and resources to learn on their own, but often the process becomes too time consuming or expensive to fully develop a professional quality marketing skill set without external help. It's not because you aren't good at creating great products (you're creating valuable products every day in your business), or because you don't want to do well.

It's because professional designers have the experience that you don't yet have.
